Since The End Of The 18th Century Brighton Has Been A Major  Seaside Resort.

From That Time It's Growth Has Been Very Rapid, And It Has Had Great Consequences For The Surrounding Region, Influencing The Emergence Of Hove And Worthing As Major Residential Resorts, And Also The Development Of Large Coastal Dormitories Like Saltdene And Peacehaven.

At The Peak Of It's Popularity Brighton Was The Leader Of Taste And Fashion And It's Name Was Synonymous With The Regency Style.

Today, Brighton And Hove Councils Have Amalgamated Since They Have Been Given City Status. Together They Form The Main South - East Urban Centre Outside London, And Are The Service Centre To The Region From Chichester To Lewes, The County Towns To The Two Halves Of Sussex, And Are Important As Resorts For Long Term Residents, Day Trippers, And For The Conference Industry.

The Continuous Demand For Housing Has Resulted In An Urban Development From The Downs To The English Channel, From Peacehaven In The East, To Shoreham In The West.

The Population Of Brighton & Hove At The Last Census In 2001 was 247,817
